Picked up 50 slabs today from a guy shifting them on Freecycle.
They were so cold they froze together in the car. Heavy snow forecast for Friday so the cold snap continues.
Being a gardener puts a different outlook on life. The cold is good for breaking up the soil and splitting the Garlic bulbs. In her new book Backyard Parables, Margaret Roach talks about the higher, ‘woo-woo’ lessons we can learn from gardening. For me the winter has meant the break up of a relationship, splitting of friendships. But all necessary steps for the rebirth coming in spring and the possibility of new blooms.
Bought the first and second early seed potatoes yesterday. Maris Peer and Pentland Javelin.
The idea behind chitting is to get them sprouting early in the light before planting at Easter. If they went into the cold and wet soil at the moment they’d just rot away. Will keep them on a bright, cool windowsill.
The maincrop seed potatoes should be on sale next week. The other people on the allotment recommend variety Kestrel because of their resistance to slugs, which are a big problem locally. Will get a big bag of them!
I’ve never had the room to really space out the potatoes, tended to cram them together and crops have been poor. Will be interesting to see if wider spacing gives bigger crops, as the books say. Watch this space!
Managed to get fleece over two of the beds before the frost comes back next week.
Will try to get the other three beds covered by the weekend.
Finally finished the paths, and Ian finished digging over the remaining patches.
Weather set to take a turn for the worse later in the week, so time to get back to sorting through the seed box. Wilkos start stocking seed potatoes from Monday 14th!
The area at the back of the plot was full of rubbish. Took two trips to the tip to shift it all, but job done.
Might slab it over before putting the shed and greenhouse up.
Here’s the bed plan for 2013…
Made a start on the paths. We have use of a huge pile of wood chip so have used this for paths between the beds.
There will be 5 beds in total. Have made a plan in Excel. Will see if I can post it up later.
A big thanks to Harry for putting in a shift. Good lad!
