What a wonderful sunny day!

Well, as the moat had receded, I finally made my second (I think) visit of 2014 to the plot… in better shape than I hoped, and have managed to haul away further crops of Swede, Leeks, Purple Sprouting, Beetroot, Chard and Sprouts. Honestly thought would be a ground clearance operation only today! Soil moist and workable, and despite sunshine, no sunburn!

Top bed cleared apart from the Elephant Garlic (planted in Nov), and rest of bed planted up with Parsnips (Hollow Crown- yes, I am trying again, trying to beat the grand total of zero harvested last year!!!!), Onions (Red Baron & Centurion) and Peas (Meteor).

Initial Stick in the Sand for 2014

Definitely growing in 2014:

  • Beetroot
  • Carrots (long uns to avoid wireworm that attacked round ones on surface in 2013)
  • Onions (Sensya planted early Nov 2013)
  • Garlic (Elephant planted early Nov 2013)
  • Celeriac
  • Swede
  • Sweetcorn (sow earlier)
  • Khol Rabi (try again)
  • Squash (lots!)
  • Courgettes (may grow at home to keep eye on slug attack)
  • Oca (to replace tatties
  • Leeks
  • Sprouts
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Peas
  • French Beans
  • Mange Tout
  • More Herbs! (didn’t grow many in 2013; looking at Oregano especially as apparently Cabbage Whites hate it)

Definitely not growing in 2014:

  • Potatoes (attacked by wireworm in 2013, growing Oca instead)

Still debating growing:

  • Broad Beans (grew well initially, good crop then suddenly went black and keeled over in 2013
  • Parsnips (not a single one in 2013 came up- sown too early or bad seed? Dunno)
  • ???Mystery crops???

Tidy up time before Chrimbo

Bamboo canes gathered, pea vines dug in, and plot mostly tidied and weeded. Straggly bits on left are Sensya early November sown onions which are going great and were initially planted under fleece to stop pigeons pulling out whilst getting established; just to right of them are some self sown broad beans- lets see if they survive winter! Behind them under netting are Kale/ Leeks/ Swedes/ Sprouts etc- still plenty to feed us over the winter months

Still producing!

2013-12-07 15.28.30

It is my intention to keep the plot producing 12 months of the year; other allotmenteers seem to have dug everything up, but this is latest haul in early December- beetroot, potatoes, leeks, kale, marrow- even some sweetcorn which appears okay but will be checked more thoroughly later

Unintentional mushrooms, leaving them alone… perhaps poisonous?

Appeared in the wood chippings we used to make walkways between beds, not gonna chance it!2013-09-12 09.18.44

Non vegetable elements

These Nasturtiums popped up out of nowhere on plot, love these, so left them even though croding peas! Atract the bees and butterflies anyway

Popped in some unidentified seedlings found in Homebase… 50p for a dozen Cabbage or Cauli? Bit late but who knows

Soft stuff!

Courgettes, squash and Marrow, yum. Note for next year- less Marrows and more Squashes!!!
